The AP Art program is designed to encourage students to do college quality work while still in high school. Students work towards creating a strong portfolio of art to be finished at the beginning of May. A portfolio of work is submitted both digitally and physically in AP 2D design. Students should participate in the program because they want to challenge themselves to do the best work they can. The grade they receive for the course from their instructor at MTA is separate from the score on their AP exam. There is a fee for the AP Exam/evaluation. Students may take the AP course, but if they do not take the exam, their transcript from MTA no longer says AP. Instead, it will say Advanced.
Students can develop excellent portfolios without participating in the AP program, however there are some advantages to participating; extended time to work on art, materials and space available, guidance and support from the teacher and other motivated students around them.
1. Know what is involved…….there is a great deal of work involved. It is a BIG commitment of time and effort.
2. Be prepared. Be strongly motivated. Be curious. Be willing to take risks.
3. Bring to class work that shows skill and ability, using a variety of media and techniques.
Show that you understand: line, shape, color, texture, value, form, space, contrast, emphasis, variety, proportion, movement, and unity.
4. Bring to class a body of Summer work. This important to gauge what subject matter, media, and techniques are your strengths. The Summer work will be graded as part of your first quarter grade and is due the first class meeting.
5. The AP class meets Blue 2 all year long.
6. Students will be expected to complete at least one finished piece of art each week as homework, as well as complete one high quality piece of artwork in class each week.
7. Students will be expected to be independent thinkers and will generate their own ideas for artwork.
8. Students will be responsible for their work and the materials they use.
9. Regular critiques are mandatory and will help students develop skills in critical analysis of their own and other’s work.
Grading will be based on productivity, quality of work, self discipline, creativity, and self motivation!
